The PEW Fellowship
Dr. Nina Wambiji was awarded the 2020 PEW Marine Fellowship funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. Her PEW Fellowship employs an interdisciplinary approach to advancing knowledge about the interactions between different fisheries and billfishes as well as strengthening the capacity of WIO countries to collect and report data to contribute to the development of an effective regional conservation and management plan.
Specifically, Dr. Wambiji’s PEW Fellowship builds upon the BILLFISH-WIO efforts through expanding this work to Somalia, Comoros, Seychelles and Mauritius with the aim of:
- Examining fisheries interactions with billfish species;
- Developing and strengthen data collection and reporting systems;
- Enhancing the conservation of billfish species through developing the capacity of stakeholders;
- Developing innovative ways to disseminate information on the plight of billfish to diverse audiences.
